According to reports, a coup took place on Friday 30 September when a group of officers decided to remove lieutenant colonel Damiba, president of Burkina Faso, who sought refuge in a french military base and is now in neighbouring Togo, the reason being a worsening conflict. Reportedly, chaos ensued over the weekend as protestors attacked the french embassy and other buildings associated with France, who have withdrawn troops from the area having completed a controversial nine year operation.

The russian military group Wagner have been known to be present in the area since France announced their withdrawal. It is not known whether Wagner are u.n. delegates.
The situation in Burkina Faso has been attributed to jihadist violence opposing western interests in the area, which has been described by the u.n. as a land of opportunity. Reportedly, their main export (70%) is gold, which increased by 32% in 2011. According to a report, they are the fourth largest exporter of gold in Africa after south Africa, Mali and Ghana.
