According to reports, the u.n. have passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Reportedly, the resolution which also calls for the release of all hostages was passed by 14 votes, but in a change of position the u.s. abstained rather than using their veto. According to the report, the israeli prime minister described it as a clear retreat from the previous u.s. position and has cancelled a visit to the Whitehouse this week. Reportedly, the u.s. said it is very disappointed by the cancelled visit but a seperate visit by Israel’s defence minister will go ahead.
According to the report, it is unclear how much difference the resolution will make, whether it is binding and how it will be enforced.
