According to a report, historically orthodox jews have been exempt from conscription but 500 soldiers have been killed in the war in Gaza which has resulted in some members of the government and opposition placing the onus of military duty on the orthodox community. Reportedly, the judiciary found the policy of exemption to be discriminatory and Israel will be obliged to conscript orthodox jews from Monday.
According to the report, a member of the war cabinet has praised the new ruling, but the israeli prime minister who was told he had until Monday to present a new plan has asked the court for a thirty day extension in order to find a compromise.
