According to a report, the supreme court has ruled that ceta, the eu and Canada’s comprehensive economic and trade agreement undermines Irish sovereignty. Reportedly, it was provisionally entered into force in 2017, but all national parliaments in eu countries have to approve ceta before it takes full effect.
According to the report, ceta which forgoes 99% of tariffs features the strongest ever commitment to promoting labour rights, protecting the environment and sustainable development. Reportedly, ceta integrates eu and Canadian commitments to apply international rules on workers’ rights, environmental protection and climate action, and these obligations are binding. According to the European commission trade hub, ceta improves and secures eu companies access to the Canadian services market.
