According to a report, the sudanese army say they have broken a seige imposed by the rapid support forces on El Obeid, the capital of the state of north Kordofan which connects the capital, Khartoum to Darfur. Reportedly, several parts of Khartoum have been retaken from the rsf by the army.
According to the report, the two have been in conflict for nearly two years which has divided the country, with the rsf controlling the Darfur region. Reportedly, both have been accused of atrocities with the leaders being sanctioned by the u.s.
According to the report, there were celebrations in the streets as the army marched into the city. Reportedly, the finance minister said lifting the seige was a massive step in lifting the rsf seige of the capital of north Darfur and would allow the delivery of aid to Kordofan.
According to the report, the situation in El Obeid during the near two year seige was described as horrific with no medical or food aid. Reportedly, the army is advancing west towards the rsf. According to the report, recent fighting around El Fashir has compelled the medical charity Doctors without borders to terminate operations at a famine stricken camp nearby which houses about 500,000 displaced people.
Reportedly, the rsf who formed in 2013 and now control some of Sudan’s gold mines were accused of ethnic cleansing of the non arab population in Darfur, which they deny. According to the report, the united arab emirates have been asked to stop supporting them, and Kenya’s hosting of the rsf last week as they sought to form a parallel government was criticised, with Sudan recalling their Kenyan ambassador.
Reportedly, the war has resulted in 15,000 deaths, and according to the u.n. the largest displacement crises with 9 million people forced to flee their homes.
