Pro and anti establishment Eritrean groups clash

According to a report, 150 people were injured, fifteen seriously in Tel Aviv as chaos ensued between rival eritrean migrants outside an event organised by the embassy. Reportedly, the conflict was between pro and anti establishment groups.

Eritrea is a north east african country on the Red sea coast. It shares its borders with Ethiopia, Sudan and Djbouti. According to a report, Isaias Afewerki has been president of Eritrea since shortly after he led the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front to victory in 1991 ending a thirty year war for independence from Ethiopia.

Reportedly, Eritrean forces have beeen fighting in the Tigray region of Ethiopia that borders Eritrea, first allied to the Tigray people’s liberation front (TPLF) who struggled against marginalisation in Ethiopia, then on the side of the Ethiopian government. According to a report, in November 2022 a peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF did not include Eritrea. Reportedly, enforced and indefinite conscription for men and women in Eritrea was a criticism of Mr Afwerki, with families of draft evaders punished.
