Accrdingto a report Afghanistan are facing a humanitarian crisis, meanwhile the u.s. have reportedly frozen us$9.5 billion in Afghan assets and have prohibited deliveries of cash. Reportedly china backed Afghanistan on Wednesday, saying the u.s. have no legitimate reason to do so.

Belarus

According to a report the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko claims last summer’s protests, said to be the largest protests in twenty seven years were part of a western plot to replace him.

Reportedly following talks in Moscow, Belarus and Russia have agreed to move towards shared monetary policies and a common agricultural policy. According to the report the prime minister of Belarus has approved programmes towards trade with Russia, joint ventures and coordinated programmes to support national producers.

The external balance assessment approach is an assessment of current accounts taking into account possible policy distortions. Sanctions

According to reports a build up of Russian troops on the Ukraine border has resulted in the u.s. imposing new sanctions, backed by nato. Sanctions are reportedly subject to the treasuries office of foreign assets control, ofac. According to reports around twenty Russia related persons are the subjects of sanctions for evading u.n. sanctions restricting trade and financial transactions with north Korea. Rosnoboronexport, three Russian banks and related personnel are sanctioned for their support to the Syrian government. The u.s. imposed sanctions on a Russian-Venezuelan bank for providing support to the state owned PetrĂ³leos de Venezuela. Sanctioned for operating in Venezuela’s oil sector were two subsiduaries of Russian state oil company Rosneft, two related individuals, two Russian flagged ships and their registered owners. According to reports, in August the u.s. imposed sanctions on two businesses, one insurance involved in the construction of the Nord II pipeline, designed to bring natural gas from Russia to Germany.

Ofac have active sanctions operating in the following countries; Belarus, Burundi, Central African Republic, Cuba, Hongkong, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Somalia, Sudan and Darfur, South Sudan, Syria and Zimbabwe. Other sanctions are related to economic activity with some nations such as the Balkans, Burma, the Congo, Iraq, Nicaragua, Lebanon, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Lebanon.

Nato are believed to enforce u.n. sanctions. The seizing of assets is becoming more generalised in cases of criminal activity, sometimes unproven.

Business on 76th unga agenda

The 76th u.n. general assembly opens today in New York and runs until 30th September. Themes are said to be building resilience and implementing the 2030 agenda.

Conflict in the middle east

Reportedly when Israel took back the west bank in 1967 Palestinian fighters moved their bases to Jordan. Reportedly Israel entered Lebanon in 1982 following several exchanges with the plo, and fought alongside a christian dominated army. They were said to have forcibly deported the plo in 1983. An outcome of the war was the Taif agreement and a balanced power share of christians and muslims. Israel withdrew in 2000. Reportedly, in 2005 Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri was killed by a bomb attack, dna evidence suggested it may have been the work of a young male suicide bomber. Syria withdrew from Lebanon the same year.

Reportedly a cross border raid by hezbolla in 2006 began an Israeli-Hezbolla conflict in Lebanon, Israel and the Golan heights. According to reports it resulted in the deaths of up to 1,300 Lebanese and 165 Israelis, and severely damaged civil infrastructure resulting in around a million Lebanese and 300-500,000 Israelis being displaced.

Hezbolla was said to have emerged from shia clerics in a model set out by Ayatolla Khomeini following the Iranian revolution. Reportedly sunnis disagree with the agenda. Said to be pro nationalism, hezbolla supports shia minorities, is active in Samaria, has seats in the Lebanese government and is said to be part of the united Iraqi coalition.

Palestinians living in southern Lebanon are said to be strictly controlled by hezbolla. Reportedly rocket attacks on 5 August were the fourth of a series targeting Israel over three months, resulting in Israeli airstrikes, the first against Lebanon since 2006. Hezbolla have admitted responsibility for the latest attack.

Hezbolla reportedly supported the Syrian government during the war in Syria, said to have begun as part of a broader arab uprising in 2011. In 2014, according to a report the cia estimated there were 20,000-31,500 members of isis in Iraq and Syria. Christians were being persecuted. Reportedly, in 2015 the uk house of commons approved a bombing campaign against Syria. According to a Whitehouse report, defeated rebel groups were being retrained by u.s. forces. The war was said to have resulted in over half the Syrian population seeking asylum, an estimated 6.8 million people.

The pope and Ayatolla Sistani

Reportedly Pope Francis is visiting Slovakia in his first international trip since an operation in March. He is said to have recovered but cannot stand for long periods of time. According to reports his last visit was to Iraq where he met Ayatolla Sistani.

Reportedly born in Iran, Ayatolla Sistani has been living in Iraq since 1951 where he studied theology and jurisprudence. As a school of thought shia Islam is believed to be more independent. He is said to have been a peaceful envoy in conflicts between shias and sunnis.

Following the u.s. invasion Sistani and his followers reportedly petitioned occupying forces for a constitutional convention and called for a democratic vote from the people to form a government. In 2004 he travelled to London for medical treatment. On return he took part in a truce between Muqrada al Sadre, a shia scholar, politician and military leader and the u.s. and allies.

Reportedly Ayatolla Sistani is rarely seen in public except a few short videos, but he does not say anything.

Previously classified document released

According to reports, on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks the u.s. government have released a previously classified 16 page document alleging the Saudi government supported the plan and the hijackers, but fails to provide evidence. The document which was released on the demand of relatives of 9/11 victims and is partially censored, leaves a question as to whether the hijackers were chosen or self delegated.

Reportedly the World trade center is an international organisation connecting governments with businesses and is still operating. Twenty one years after the attack the u.s. military court have begun pre trial proceedings against five men, reportedly charged with aiding the nineteen hijackers. According to reports, criteria being determined is whether information extracted by using torture or enhanced interrogation techniques is admissible or accurate. The trial when it begins is expected to last a year or more.

Business groups ask Whitehouse to resume trade talks with China

According to reports President Biden has spoken with chinese president Xi Jinping, the second call since democrats came into power. Reportedly, phase one of a u.s. China trade deal in 2020 halved the tariffs imposed on China, but the reciprocal arrangement appears heavy handed. Phase two never occurred. According to a recent report a letter from u.s. business groups has called on the president to resume trade talks.

The failure of the nuclear non proliferation treaty

According to reports nuclear activity is prohibited in the Antarctic according to the 1959 Antartic treaty. Reportedly ozone depletion over Antartica has significantly declined since the 1980’s. The dumping of nuclear waste in the Arctic was said to be having an impact on human health and the environment. Ozone depletion according to a report in May 2020 was at an unprecedented level. According to the Yabkolov report, 1992 there was evidence of the dumping of nuclear waste in the Kara sea north of Siberia, in the sea of Japan and near the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian far east, evidence of extensive low level liquid waste discharge and serious problems with nuclear fuelling vessels in the Russian north and far east.
