According to a report, the leader of Gabon’s coup Brice Nguema who has been sworn in as interim president has promised to return Gabon to civilian rule after free transparent elections. Reportedly, Mr Nguema was one of the former president’s inner circle and believed to be his cousin. According to the report, crowds of cheering civilians turned up at the inauguration, even former ministers.
Reportedly, the coup is the sixth in a french speaking african country in three years. According to the report, the catalyst was the reelection of former president Ali Bongo Ondimba, the process was not considered transparent and the votes could not be verified afterwards.
Reportedly, across much of west and central Africa younger voters have become widely disenchanted with the political class, fuelled by unemployment, a lack of economic opportunities, a perceived high level of corruption, manipulation of elections, privilege and resentment at the persistent influence of France.
