New president inaugurated

According to a report, the leader of Gabon’s coup Brice Nguema who has been sworn in as interim president has promised to return Gabon to civilian rule after free transparent elections. Reportedly, Mr Nguema was one of the former president’s inner circle and believed to be his cousin. According to the report, crowds of cheering civilians turned up at the inauguration, even former ministers.

Reportedly, the coup is the sixth in a french speaking african country in three years. According to the report, the catalyst was the reelection of former president Ali Bongo Ondimba, the process was not considered transparent and the votes could not be verified afterwards.

Reportedly, across much of west and central Africa younger voters have become widely disenchanted with the political class, fuelled by unemployment, a lack of economic opportunities, a perceived high level of corruption, manipulation of elections, privilege and resentment at the persistent influence of France.

Pro and anti establishment Eritrean groups clash

According to a report, 150 people were injured, fifteen seriously in Tel Aviv as chaos ensued between rival eritrean migrants outside an event organised by the embassy. Reportedly, the conflict was between pro and anti establishment groups.

Eritrea is a north east african country on the Red sea coast. It shares its borders with Ethiopia, Sudan and Djbouti. According to a report, Isaias Afewerki has been president of Eritrea since shortly after he led the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front to victory in 1991 ending a thirty year war for independence from Ethiopia.

Reportedly, Eritrean forces have beeen fighting in the Tigray region of Ethiopia that borders Eritrea, first allied to the Tigray people’s liberation front (TPLF) who struggled against marginalisation in Ethiopia, then on the side of the Ethiopian government. According to a report, in November 2022 a peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF did not include Eritrea. Reportedly, enforced and indefinite conscription for men and women in Eritrea was a criticism of Mr Afwerki, with families of draft evaders punished.

News Niger

According to a report, Niger’s new rulers have accused France of blatant interference. Reportedly, speaking on state TV the spokesman for the national council for the safeguard of the homeland, Amadou Abdramane a nigerian air officer said, ‘Mr Macron’s comments and his unceasing efforts in favour of an invasion of Niger aim at perpetuating a neocolonial operation against the nigerian people, who ask for nothing more than to decide its own destiny for itself.

According to the report, thousands gathered outside France’s military base in Niamey to demand its forces leave. Reportedly, there are 1500 french troops stationed in Niger, many at the base.

Palestinian shot dead

According to reports, a palestinian man was killed during an israeli military raid in the town of Aqaba, Samaria. Reportedly, the soldiers were following a lead related to a shooting attack in the Jordan Valley last month. According to the report, the suspect who worked in Israel was not there though his brother lived in the building. Reportedly, a bystander Abdul Ghannan an eighth grade teacher was walking with his wife when he was shot.

According to the report, violence has been on the rise in Samaria over the past year and a half, with a rise in palestinian shooting attacks and almost nightly arrest raids.

Ali Bongo Ondimba

According to a report, the former president of Gabon was named Alain Bernard Bongo at birth but changed his name to Ali in 1973 when he and his father converted to islam. Reportedly, he went to school in France, then studied law at the University of Paris. According to the report, in 1977 he released a funk album called ‘A brand new man’ under the name Alain Bongo, produced by James Brown’s former manager. Reportedly, under his father’s ministry he was minister of foreign affairs and minister of defence.

News Niger

According to a report, Niger’s new regime have ordered the police to expel France’s ambassador. Reportedly, the visas of french ambassador Sylvain Itte and his family have been cancelled in response to actions contrary to Niger’s interests, including refusing to respond to an invitation to meet Niger’s new foreign minister. According to the report, a letter they sent him read the envoy ‘no longer enjoys the privileges and immunities attached to his status as a member of the diplomatic personnel in the french embassy.’

News Gabon

According to a report, leaders of the coup in Gabon have named a transitional president, Oligui Nguema. Reportedly, the former president is under house arrest and some of his staff have been arrested on charges of treason, embezzlement, corruption and falsifying the president’s signature.

According to a report, Mr Ali Bongo Ondima was the third president of post colonial Gabon. Reportedly, his father who ruled for 41 years was said to have amassed a fortune. According to the report, groups of people were celebrating and shouting, “Bongo out” on the streets of the capital, Libreville. Reportedly, Mr Ondima’s main opposition, university professor Albert Ondo Ossa had accused Mr Ondima of fraud and asked that he hand over power without bloodshed. According to the report, Mr Ondima’s loss will mark a blow to France’s reach in Africa.

News Niger

According to a report, the algerian minister for foreign affairs has returned from a tour of Nigeria, Benin and Ghana, while his second in command made a parallel visit to Niamey where he held talks with the prime minister, Mahaman Lamine Zeine. Reportedly, Algeria who shares almost 1000 km of border with Niger is proposing a six month transition to civilian rule, the proposed political discussions is with the participation of all parties in Niger without exclusion. According to the report, Algeria who rejects a military solution implied they could not authorise use of their airspace in the case of a military operation.

Isreali plane lands in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

According to a report, an israeli airplane travelling from Seychelles to Tel Aviv made an unscheduled landing at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Monday night due to an assumed electrical fault. Reportedly, Israel does not have formal ties with Saudi Arabia but since last year flights from Israel have been allowed to cross over its airspace. According to the report, Jeddah is approved in the case of unscheduled or emergency landings.

Reportedly, thrre were 128 israelis on board, passengers said they had been treated warmly by saudis. A new plane took them home in the morning.

Ministry meeting in Rome

According to a report, Libya’s foreign minister Najla al Mangoush was suspended by prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah following a meeting with the israeli foreign minister in Rome a few days ago. Reportedly, she has fled the country following news of the meeting revealed by the israeli foreign minister which sparked two days of protests across the country. According to a report, the israeli foreign minister has said he had no knowledge of the meeting.
