German Election

According to reports, there was an 84% turnout in the german election, result as follows. The christian democrats or cdu 28.6% of the vote, alternative for Germany (afd) 20.8%, the previously ruling social democrats (spd) 16.4%, greens 11.6% and the left party 8.8%.

Reportedly, the christian democrats and their bavarian sister party, the christian social union will try and form a coalition with the social democrats (spd), the only alternative would be a coalition with afd which has been ruled out by Friedrich Merz, leader of the cdu. According to a report, the cdu agenda includes migration (Germany currently accepts more migrants than any other country in Europe) and unity in Europe.

Reportedly, Friedrich Merz who was born to a catholic family and joined the cdu when he was still at school, used to ride a motorbike and hang out by a chip stand. According to the report, following school he enlisted for military service, then studied law. Reportedly, Mr Merz worked as a lawyer before entering politics; he was elected to the european parliament in 1989 before entering the bundestag in 1994. According to the report, he decided to leave parliament to make room for reflection and pursued a career as a lawyer for more than ten years from 2009.

Pope Francis Improving

According to reports, pope Francis who is suffering from double pneumonia and bronchitis is being treated at the Gemelli hospital in Rome. The u.s., Ukraine and Russia

According to reports, the president of Ukraine said the u.s. president is living in a disinformation space following comments about president Zelensky’s approval rating which has steadily fallen since the start of the war.

According to the report, Ukraine said the cost of the war so far is $320 billion with $200 billion coming from the u.s. and Europe, the u.s. disputes this. Reportedly, the ukrainian military is reliant on u.s. weapons, and the ukrainian president wants the u.s. to be a part of an international security force agreed upon to oversee a ceasefire, but the kremlin said this is unacceptable.

Meeting in Riyadh

According to the report, an agreement was reached to appoint ambassadors to each other’s countries as soon as possible, to lift obstacles to diplomatic missions including lifting restrictions to bank transfers to embassies, to start the process on ukrainian settlement and to appoint representatives from each country to create conditions for restarting cooperation in full.

According to the report, he said, Any appearance by armed forces under some other flag does not change anything.

According to the report, the russian president has said if president Zelensky wants to participate in the negotiations he will send people to take part, and the kremlin say the president of Russia is preparing to meet the Ukrainian president if necessary.

Meetings

According to reports, officials from the u.s. and Russia are arriving in Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, Poland’s prime minister has asked officials to immediately boost defence spending and the uk prime minister said he is prepared to put uk peace keeping troops in Ukraine if and when the war ends.

Talks to end the war could start immediately

The u.s. president meets the king of Jordan

Reportedly, the u.s. president met Jordan’s King Abdullah on Tuesday to talk about his plan to move 2 million palestinians living there to Jordan, Egypt and other places. According to the report, King Abdullah said the arab states rejected the idea and that Egypt would put forward an alternative.

Emergency meeting

According to a report, the democratic republic of the Congo and Rwanda held an emergency meeting on Saturday following m23’s capture of Goma in the eastern drC. Reportedly, Rwanda want drC to negotiate directly with m23 which they refuse to do. According to the report, the congolese president, FĂ©lix Tshishekedi blames the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame for backing m23 with weapons and troops and invading drC with the intention of looting the country’s mineral wealth and orchestrating regime change.

According to the report, Rwanda has a long history of military intervention inside drC linked to the aftermath of the 1994 rwandan genocide.
Reportedly, Mr Kagame said that Rwanda’s priority is to destroy an armed group formed by the hutu genocide perpetrators who massacred rwandan tutsis and then fled to what is now eastern drC. According to the report, Mr Kagame has accused drC’s army of joining forces with them to slaughter congolese tutsis and threaten Rwanda, but a former u.n. investigator in drC said Rwanda is maintaining a sphere of influence in the lucrative eastern drC.

Reportedly, in 2024 25.6 million people in drC were suffering from high acute food insecurity, this includes around 3.1 million people facing critical levels of food insecurity. According to the report, there is a concern that the campaign will strengthen internal opposition and lead to a coup.

U.s. reduce foreign aid

According to reports, the u.s. contributes more humanitarian aid than any other country, $60 billion in 2023, $40 billion of which went to USAid which has overseen programs in more than 100 countries. Reportedly, u.s. foreign development assistance has been paused for a 90 day revue, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland have also reduced foreign aid.
