New president Senegal

According to a report, Bassirou Faye has been sworn in as Senegal’s youngest president with 54.3% of the vote in the national election. Reportedly, he promises systematic change and to defend the integrity of the nation. According to the report, the former tax collector who co-founded the Pastef party which the government had dissolved became the 5th president since independence from France in 1960.

Reportedly, Mr Faye was released from prison, believed to be political just ten days before the election on 24 March. According to the report, three years of political unrest resulted in hundreds being arrested. Reportedly, his campaign began in prison.

According to the report, in his speech he urged more solidarity with african countries, and professed an interest in bringing Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali back into ecowas. Reportedly, his aims and objectives are easing the cost of living crisis, food self sufficiency and fighting corruption. According to the report, he has promised to restore national sovereignty over assets such as oil and gas, and leave the franc currency which he sees as a legacy of french colonialism. Reportedly, he doesn’t have a majority in the national assembly and will need to build alliances to pass new laws.
