According to a report more than 5000 mainly women and children from northern Ireland sought asylum in the south following the introduction of internment without trial in August 1971. Reportedly Irish nationalist houses were burned, according to one source from 1969 leading to the first flight of refugees. According to reports they were mainly put in camps in the south and many didn’t settle.
