Homelessness and the revised rent allowance limit

According to a report, in Ireland in 2011 3,808 people were sleeping rough or in homeless accommodation which usually comprises of private emergency accomodation, commercial hotels and bed and breakfasts. Around 2012, a radical change occurred. Tennants in receipt of social welfare were told that their rent allowance would be cancelled if their rent exceeded a certain limit. The social welfare rent limit probably differs from area to area. For a single person living in Westport, County Mayo for instance, the rent limit for a single person was around €84. There were few homes available below the new rent limits which meant people lost their rent allowance. By 2016 there were 6,906 people registered as living in emergency accomodation. The average age was 30.5, 2,968 people were part of a family. Figures for people sleeping rough not registered. Many young people leave Ireland to work abroad. In the year to April 2022 an estimated 27,600 irish people left Ireland to go abroad.
