According to a report, an election is underway in Iran but turnout is expected to be low. Reportedly, two separate polls are taking place on Friday, one to choose the next members of parliament and the other to elect the assembly of experts, the assembly selects and oversees Iran’s leader.
According to a report, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been leader of Iran for three decades. Reportedly, he was arrested six times during the reign of former shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and was the subject of an assassination attempt following the shah’s overthrowing.
According to the report, Ali Khamenei was one of Iran’s leaders during the Iran-Iraq war and developed close ties with the revolutionary guards which he controls. Reportedly, the assembly of experts elected him following the death of Ruholla Khomeni who was the first leader following the revolution and a close confidante. According to the report, he is the head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces.
Reportedly, all candidates for the assembly of experts, the presidency and the parliament are vetted by the guardian council who is selected by the ayatollah. According to the report, journalists and bloggers have been imprisoned for insulting Ayatollah Khamenei, some have died in custody.
