Ecuador’s election

According to reports, Luisa Gonzales has finished first in Ecuador’s general election which has been marred by the assassination of one of the candidates, Fernando Villavicencio on 9 August. Reportedly, prior to his political career Mr Villavicencio was an investigative journalist who spoke out against corruption and violence in Ecuador whose homicide rates have reached unpresidented levels in the last two years.

According to a report, Ms Gonzales the protégé of leftist ex president Rafael Correa has promised to enhance public spending and social programmes. She will meet second place rival Daniel Noboa for a further election on October 15, as neither achieved over 50% of the vote.
