Could u.n. presence be related to oil?

According to reports an attempted kidnapping north of Goma in the Congo resulting in the death of three believed to be u.n. personnel on Monday; one said to be ambassador, a thought to be military policeman and a driver who were travelling in a MONUSCO convoy 10 miles north of the regional capital.

The u.n. presence in the Congo was supposedly established in 1999 and according to one report consists of around 28,000 personnel. The as called kivu conflict of the late nineties is believed to have concerned Rwandan independence from Motubu, president of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo until 1997.

The as described Rwandan genocide of 1994 was blamed on the Rwandan patriotic front, said to be composed of Tutsi refugees who invaded from Uganda. Tutsis were reportedly expelled in the late 90’s. Currently 1.8 million Tutsis live in Rwanda, 1.7 million live in neighbouring Burindi.

The u.n. presence in DRC is said to be in north Kivu which has been the scene of several ebola outbreaks. Last major outbreak thought to be in 2020, now reportedly under control, possibly due to vaccines. According to a report petrol reserves were found in north Kivu on the shore of Lake Mwitanzige earlier this Century.
