Prime minister of India, Narendra Midi has been criticised because of the new addition to citizenship legislation which appears to omit muslims. The amendment is said to provide Indian citizenship for religious minorities who have fled persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Muslims make up the majority in these countries.
According to demographics there are over 200 million Muslims in India at present. Reportedly more than the thought to be 197 million population of Pakistan; 2017 figures. According to one report, three million muslims live in England, more than any other country outside Saudi Arabia. There was estimated to be 1.1 million Pakistani people living in Britain in 2011, the most substantial diaspora according to the report.
According to one source, the presence of Islam in India was noted prior to the muslim conquests, mainly thought to be along Arab trade routes. The migration to Britain, according to a report began in the 1950’s. Said to compromise mainly of politically disaffected pakistani Sikhs and highly educated migrants said to be from ancient Gujarat. A known to be affluent region, thought to have connected with early european visitors. The reasons for Pakistan and Bangladesh migration may have been due to political conflicts. In 2002, reportedly a thousand muslims were killed in Gujarat.
India has been impoverished by colonialism which may explain the rift between Indians and thought to be western orientated muslims.
