Prime minister of Haiti resigns

According to a report, the prime minister of Haiti, Mr Ariel Henry has announced his resignation. Reportedly, he urged haitians to remain calm in a video address, saying, “The government I am leading will resign immediately after the installation of a transitional council.” According to the report, Mr Henry who is stuck in Puerto Rico has been prime minister since 2021 following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise and has repeatedly postponed elections, saying security must be restored first. Reportedly, haitians have questioned him governing the country for so long without an elected president.

According to the report, armed gangs who control most parts of the capital and some government buildings have demanded the resignation of the unelected prime minister. Reportedly, the police force is weak and nearly 40 police stations are destroyed. According to the report, the u.s. secretary of state has committed a total of $300 million to the 1,000 strong u.n. backed security force to be led by Kenya.

According to the report, the Guyana president who is chairman of the caricom group of Caribbean nations said he acknowledged the resignation upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council who will be mandated to swiftly appoint an interim prime minister; he said that anyone intending to run in Haiti’s next elections will not be able to participate.
