The Mal, Castlebar

The Mal, Castlebar is of historic interest. On a tree in the mal Father Andrew Conroy was hanged, possibly for collaborating with French army personnel. According to local reports, he often had a French general or two visiting. The French reportedly landed in Killalla, Ballina in 1798. The so called race of Castlebar was said to have occurred in August of that year. French and Irish infantry reportedly chased saxon infantry from near Castlebar to further afield.
Another point of interest is the house where Margaret Burke Sheridan was born. Possibly saxon and a famous singer of opera and other songs such as Danny boy. A sad end to her career reportedly occurred in Italy but there is disagreement. According to documentation an Italian man shot himself during a concert. A reliable source says she seemingly fell out with the British because they murdered her compatriot.
