Greenway not green anymore

The as called Great Western greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling track in Ireland. Forty two Kilometres long, it was designated a European destination of excellence. Beginning in Westport, County Mayo to coastal Mulranney where the track may divide to Ballycroy or to Achill. The track runs through different terrains and is regarded as unspoilt, but now farmers are asked not to use chemical sprays as there may be somthing wrong with the terrain in parts. Sprays kill the integrity of the grass, plus plants used as food for cattle and other species. Grass is insufficient. The area is home to wild goats.
The global pharmaceutical company, Allergan is situated on the edge of the greenway in Westport, and according to a report is opening a new facility, including a laboratory. Known for the manufacturing of chemicals to put into eyes or inject into skin. The long term effects are known to be detrimental.
Westport is described as Allergan’s largest and most complex production site. Opened in 1977. Some locals are concerned however about a chemical waste sign situated on a roundabout on the edge of the greenway, a few metres from the Allergan site. There are fears that chemical waste may infiltrate the water supply. A major cause for concern is the long term effects, especially for children growing up in the area.
Allergan have another manufacturing operation in Ireland, believed to be in Clonshaugh, Dublin.
